DAY 22 - FROM BETHLEHEM TO GOLGATHA

"Mary, Did You Know?"
  Media
"The Rebel Jesus"

This contemporary carol was
written by Buddy Greene and
Mark Lowry, and first recorded
in 1990.  Lots of artists have sung
it since, like Kenny Rogers and
Wynonna, in this version cut
in 1997.  It's the title song
 on a country compilation CD
 on the Warner label.

Jackson Browne, on piano
and lead vocal,  joins here
with The Chieftains on this
song he wrote specifically for
THE BELLS OF DUBLIN CD,
released in '91 on
the RCA VICTOR label.

The portrait above, and the illustrations below, depicting the life of Christ,
are all by Gustave Dore', a 19th century French artist, engraver,
illustrator and sculptor.  Dore's English Bible contains hundreds
of images, from which we've chosen a small selection.
His work includes numerous literary publications,
including Cervantes Don Quixote, Milton's Paradise Lost,
Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven," Tennyson's Idylls of the King,
The Divine Comedy, and many more.  His work is readily accessible
on the web from a number of sources.

.
The Christian mysteries are an indivisible whole.
If we become immersed in one,
we are led to all the others.
Thus the way from Bethlehem leads
inevitably to Golgotha, from the crib
to the cross.
When the blessed virgin brought the
child to the temple, Simeon prophesied
that her soul would be pierced by a sword,
that this child was set for the fall
and the resurrection of many,
for a sign that would be contradicted.
His prophecy announced the passion,
the fight between light and darkness
that already showed itself
before the crib.

"Golgatha"

This is instrumental soundtrack style music
(dark and ominous) from Bill Streett, whose music
is featured on The David Letterman Show on occasion.
It's from a 2000 release titled Lure, from The Orchard label.

Here's another take of this song,
performed by Grassmasters (Nashville session artists mainly),
on a '05 CD titled Gospel Grass.
